PALACE

The Ducal Palace in Urbino, the residence of Federico da Montefeltro, encapsulates the essence of the Italian Renaissance, with the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche as the custodian of its precious collections.

The Galleria Nazionale delle Marche displays its valuable collections in the magnificent Ducal Palace in Urbino, commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro. Federico, a Renaissance prince who combined culture, military skill and politics, came to power in 1444, quickly transforming Urbino into a beacon of the Italian Renaissance.

The Ducal Palace was enriched over the years with the contribution of architect Luciano Laurana. The wing facing the current Piazza Rinascimento, with its façade adorned with mullioned windows with two lights, is remarkable for its refined decoration, created by Tuscan craftsmen. This wing houses the palace’s only frescoed hall.

The functional structure of the palace reveals its modernity with dungeons, kitchens and well-organised services. Federico also had a sumptuous inlaid studiolo, a chapel of Pardon and a small temple dedicated to the Muses.

The grandeur of the flats and the Festival Hall is evident, while the Courtyard of Honour embodies the Renaissance balance of light stone and brick, celebrating Frederick’s glory as a leader and prince.

The palace also had an extraordinary library of illuminated manuscripts, which is now part of the Vatican Library. In 1474, Federico was granted the title of duke by Sixtus IV della Rovere, and his signature ‘FE-DUX’ can be found throughout the palace.

After Federico’s death, the culture and sophistication of Urbino passed to his son Guidubaldo and his wife Elisabetta Gonzaga. The Montefeltro dynasty ended with them, passing to the Della Rovere family.

Today, the palace houses collections of 17th century paintings, graphics and ceramics. The King’s Hall, with its gilded stucco ceiling, celebrates Federico and his lineage. In 1631, the duchy came under the control of the Church. The extraordinary ducal ‘Guardaroba’ was transferred to Florence when Vittoria della Rovere married Ferdinando de’ Medici. Many of the Urbino collections are now preserved in the Uffizi Gallery.
