When? From 20/06/2024 to 06/10/2024
Where? Palazzo Ducale di Urbino

It is simply entitled “Federico Barocci Urbino. The emotion of modern painting” the monographic exhibition that for four months – from 20 June to 6 October 2024 – can be admired in the evocative spaces of the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino.

Curated by Luigi Gallo (Director of the Galleria delle Marche) and Anna Maria Ambrosini Massari (Professor of History of Modern Art at the University of Urbino), with Giovanni Russo and Luca Baroni, the exhibition brings to Urbino for the first time the works of one of its most illustrious sons: Federico Barocci (1533-1612).

Painter, extraordinary draughtsman and innovative engraver, Barocci marked the Italian and European art scene for almost a century. Despite his choice, unusual at the time, to remain in his hometown, far from the great cultural centres, he succeeded in establishing himself with tenacious effort as the most admired, sought-after and paid author of sacred paintings of the second half of the 16th century.

Thanks to a set of loans from leading national and international museums that enrich the already very important collection of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, the monographic exhibition brings together 76 of Barocci’s paintings and drawings, illustrating all the stages of his long career.

In addition, for the first time, the artistic career of the Urbino master is presented according to a thematic order, aimed at delving into the peculiarities of his production by placing it in the context of the great art of the 16th and 17th centuries.

For the first time in Urbino,” says Director Gallo, “an extensive monographic exhibition will illustrate the work of one of the greatest Italian painters: Federico Barocci. The artist’s unusual choice to remain in his native city, despite having visited the major centres of Italian art, and Rome in particular, did not prevent him from becoming famous and obtaining important commissions from all over Italy and beyond. Divided into themed sections, the exhibition will host exceptional masterpieces from museums around the world and will be enhanced by an extensive focus on the artist’s drawings that will demonstrate the long and painstaking study that preceded the creation of each of his works”.
